So your .co.nz or .com is taken? Should you try a .net?
No.
A simple question. A simple answer.
But wait hold on?
Ok ok ok… So you’ve discovered that your perfect domain has already been snapped up by someone else and you’re thinking about other prefixes? We really don’t recommend using .net’s purely for the fact that internet users are stupid. They can’t be trusted, and their minds skip the end of domain names, and they will end up on someone elses website. The same way that you might dial an 0800 number when really you wanted the 0508 number. We get around 5 calls a week, from people trying to call 0508 246 888 (our awesome number is 0800 246 888, call us for a chat?).
The only time we would suggest an alternative suffix, is if you are a charity organisation – in which case .org or .org.nz’s are a good idea too. They are becoming more popular, but in the first instance we would suggest trying to get a .com or .co.nz that you’re happy with.
.co.nz or .com?
If you’re market is local and will never be global, then .co.nz’s are the way to go. They add a ‘local’ feel to your website, which kiwi’s seem to love.
If there’s a chance your brand will expand globally, then .com’s are a good base to cover. In a lot of cases we sign customers up for both the .com and .co.nz for the same domain name. This stops someone else snapping up your domain, and future proofs yourself.
What if they aren’t actually using it?
Get in touch with us, we can contact the domain owners and more than likely it will be for sale for some large figure. We also get first dibs on expiring NZ domains, so can keep an eye out for you.
